NUMBERS IN MATHS: SUMS, FRACTIONS, DECIMALS, SQUARED, SPECIAL NUMBERS AND LETTERS AS NUMBERS
money and numbers
In Maths we know a lot of symbols of sums such as +, -, x etc.
But a lot of us do not know how to read them. In this simple subtopic I will describe it.
+ plus (and)
- minus (take away)
x multiplied by (times)
: divided by
= equals (is)
> greater than
< less than
≥ greater than≤ less than
% percent of
Examples :
1. 2 + 4 = 6 two plus four equals six
two and four is six
2. 7 - 2 = 5 seven minus two equals five
seven minus two is five
seven take away two equals five
3. 3 x 3 = 9 three multiplied by three is nine
three times three equals(is) nine
4. 10 : 2 = 5 ten divided by two equals (is) five
5. 15 : 3 -2 = 3 ten divided by three minus two
equals (is) three
6. 5 % 100 = 20 five percent of one hundred
equals (is) twenty
B. FRACTIONS
There are some rules in fractional numerals
1. Fractional numerals in English are formed with cardinal and
ordinal numbers. The cardinal number is used for the numerators,
and ordinal number is used for the denominator
Examples :
2. If the numerator is more than one, the denominator is plural
examples:
C. DECIMALS
When pronouncing decimals we use the word "point" to
represent the dot. The numbers following the dot are
pronounced separately.
Examples:
1. 1.36 = one point three six
D. SQUARED / CUBED / TO THE POWER OF
1. 2³ = two squared equals four
two to the power of two equals four
2, 2³ = two cubed equals eight.
two to the power of three equals eight
We can have "to he power of" any number
Example:
2¹² = 4096 (2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 4096)
Two to the power of twelve is four thousand ninety six
E. SPECIAL NUMBERS
0
Number 0 is an interesting number because it will be pronounced in different ways. Here we see several ways of pronouncing 0 :
1. 0 = oh in years
1909 = nineteen oh nine
in bus or room number
bus 206 = bus two oh six
room 302 = room three oh two
in phone number
08150709 = oh eight one five oh seven oh nine
after a decimal point
7,05 = seven point oh five
2. 0 = nought before decimal point
0.06 = nought point oh six
3. 0 = zero in temperature
-10°C degrees below zero
in American English for number
007 = zero zero seven
4. 0 = nil in football
Bacelone 1 Real Madrid 0 = Barcelone one
Real Madrid nil
5. 0 = love in tennis
40 - 0 = Forty love
12
Number 12 often represents a dozen and number 6 represent
a half dozen. People prefer to use a dozen to 12, a half dozen to 6
Examples :
12 pens = A dozen of pens
6 piers - a half dozen of piers
Note :
a dozen is 12, but for a baker's a dozen is 13, because in
in the past bakers who were caught shortchanging customers
could be liable to severe punishment, so they used to add
an extra bread roll to make up the weight.
F. LETTERS AS NUMBERS
1. k
The letter k is sometimes used to denote 1000
1 k = 1000 3 k = 3000
The salary is £5k = the salary is £5000
2. m
The letter m is often used to denote a million
1 m = 1.000.000
