3. Fractional Numerals

There are some rules in fractional numerals

1. Fractional numerals in English are formed with cardinal and ordinal numbers. The cardinal number is used for the numerators, and ordinal number is used for the denominator.

Examples :
  • 1/2  =  a half
  • 1/4  =  a quarter  (one fourth)
  • 1/3  =  one third
  • 1/5  =  one fifth
  • 1/9  =  one ninth
2. If the numerator is more than one, the denominator is plural
Examples:
  • 3/4  =  three quarters (three fourths)
  • 2/3  =  two thirds
  • 4/5  =   four fifths
3. If the numbers are more than one with
fractional numbers are read as follows :
Examples :
  • 3 4/5 = three and four fifth
  • 5 2/7 =  five and two seventh
4. If the fractional numerals are decimal, we read as follows:
  • 3.45  =  three points forty five
  • 7.70  =  seven points seventy
  • 0.35  =  zero points thirty five
5. if the fractional numeral is followed by a noun, we read
as follows :
  • 3/5 meters =  three fifths of a meter
  • 7/4 tons  =  seven fourths of a ton
  • 50 3/5 grams  =  fifty and three fifth tons
