TRAVELLING : WHAT VOCABULARY WE NEED TO KNOW ?
Here are some English words that will be very helpful when travelling by bus, train or plane.
A. GENERAL ENGLISH TRAVEL VOCABULARY
1. time table BE /ˈtaɪmˌteɪ.bəl/ AE /ˈtaɪmˌteɪ.bəl/a list of the times when buses, trains and planes leaves and arrive
e.g. Do you have a train timetable that I could borrow ?
2. single (abbreviation of single ticket)
a ticket for a journey to a place, but not for the return
e.g May I have a single to ticket to Singapore please
3. return (abbreviation of return ticket) BE AE /rɪˈtɜːn ˌtɪk.ɪt/
a ticket for travel to a place and back again.
e.g. A return ticket to Kuala Lumpur please.
4. platform BE AE /ˈplæt.fɔːrm/
a long, flat raised structured at a railway station, where people
get on and off trains.
e.g.. The next train for Aberdeen will depart from platform 9.
5. waiting room BE AE /ˈweɪ.t̬ɪŋ ˌruːm/
a room in a place where people can sit while waiting as in a train
station or bus station.
6. ticket office
an office for selling ticket for traveling in a bus station, train
station.
7. seat BE AE /siːt/
a part of a train, plane etc that has been designed for someone
to sit on.
e.g. My ticket say 22 D but there's already someone in that seat.
8. luggage rack BE AE /ˈlʌɡ.ɪdʒ ˌræk/
a shelf on a train or a bus on which you can put your bags and
suitcases.
9. first class BE /ˌfɜːst ˈklɑːs/ AE /ˌfɝːst ˈklæs/
If you travel first class in a train, aircraft etc you use the best
and most expensive type of service.
e.g She always travels first class.
10. second class BE /ˌsek.ənd ˈklɑːs/ AE /ˌsek.ənd ˈklæs/
if you travel second class in a train, aircraft etc you use the less
expensive type of ticket that most people use.
e.g. I always travel second class.
11. ticket inspector
someone whose job is to officially inspect ticket in a train etc.
12. ticket collector
someone whose job is to collect tickets from people
13. Penalty fare BE /ˈpen.əl.ti feər/ AE /ˈpen.əl.ti fer/
the money that you pay for a journey in a bus or train that is
give to punish someone who do not have ticket or buy a ticket.
14. Arrive BE AE /əˈraɪv/
to reach a place, especially at the end of a journey.
15. Arrival BE AE /əˈraɪ.vəl/
the area of an airport that deals with passengers that have just
arrived.
e.g. You will need to show your passport when you get to
arrival.
16. Cancel BE AE /ˈkæn.səl
to decide that something that has been arranged will not happen
e.g. When a flight is canceled, an airline is obliged to provide
alternative transport or a refund.
17. delay BE AE /dɪˈleɪ/
to make something happen at a later time than originally
planned or expected.
e.g. My plane was delayed by an hour.
18. book BE AE /bʊk/ (reserve)
to arrange a flight, a train or a bus for a particular time in the
future.
e.g. You have to book a flight earlier.
19. suitcase BE AE /ˈsuːt.keɪs/
a large, rectangular container with a handle, for carrying
clothes and possessions while travelling
e.g. Have you packed/unpacked your suitcase yet?.
20. luggage BE AE /ˈlʌɡ.ɪdʒ/
the bags, suitcase etc that contain your possessions and that
you take with you when you are travelling.
e.g. We bought some new luggage for our trip.
21. trip AE BE /trɪp/
a journey in which you go somewhere, usually for a short
time, and come back again.
