LAND TRANSPORTATION AND VEHICLES  1


Transportation : a system of vehicles, such as buses, trains, aircraft,                             etc; for getting from one place to another.

Vehicle   formal a machine, usually with wheels and an engine, 
              used for transporting people or goods on land, especially
              on roads

BE = British English
AE = American English



1. Ambulance BE  AE /ˈæm.bjə.ləns/ 
    a special vehicle used to take sick or injured people to hospital


2. Amphibian BE BE /æmˈfɪb.i.ən/  :
    am aircraft or other vehicle that can be used on land and on water;
3. Bicycle BE/ˈbaɪ.sɪ.kəl/  AE /ˈbaɪ.sə.kəl/ : 
    a two-wheeled vehicle that you sit on and move by  turning the two
    pedals.
   


4. Boxcar BE/ˈbɒks.kɑːr/ AE /ˈbɑːks.kɑːr/  : 
    a railway carriage with a roof, used for carrying goods.
5. Buggy BE AE/ˈbʌɡ.i/    a small car, usually with no roof, designed for driving on rough ground.

  : a heavy vehicle with a large blade in front, used for pushing earth and
    stones away and for making areasof ground that at the same time.
7. Cab BE AE /kæb/ : 1. taxi, (minicab) 
    2. a vehicle pulled by a horse, used as a taxi. 
8. Cable car  BE AE  /ˈkeɪ.bəl ˌkɑːr: a vehicle that hangs from and 
    is moved by a cable and transports people up steep slopes. 

    in US a vehicle on a cable railway.
     


9. Caboose BE  AE /kəˈbuːs/
    a small railway carriage usually at the back of a train

10. Dirt bike BE AE /ˈdɜːt ˌbaɪk/
      a special type of motorcycle designed for riding over rough ground,
      often used for racing. 

11. Dogsled  BE/ˈdɒɡ.sled/ AE /ˈdɑːɡ.sled/ dragster  :  
      a sledge pulled by dogs.

12. Dragster BE AE /ˈdræɡ.stər/ :
      a long narrow, fast car that has been built to take part in drag race.

13. Dray BE AE /dreɪ/:
      a large, low carriage with four wheels, pulled by horses.

14. Fire engine BE /ˈfaɪər ˌen.dʒɪn/ AE /ˈfaɪr ˌen.dʒɪn
      a large vehicle that carries firefighters and their equipment to a fire
15. Flatbed BE AE /ˈflæt.bed/ 
      a truck with a flat area at the back with no roof or slides, for
      transporting large items.

16. Forklift AE /ˈfɔrkˌlift
      a vehicle with two bars in the front for moving and lifting heavy goods
17. Freight car BE /ˈfreɪt ˌkɑːr/ 
      a large wheeled container for transporting goods, that is pulled
      by a train.

18. Funicular BE /fjuːˈnɪk.jə.lər/ AE /fjuːˈnɪk.juː.lɚ :  
      a special type of  railway that travels up and down steep slopes,
      with the carriages being pulled by a strong metal rope.

      a large vehicle that is driven from one house to another to collect
      rubbish from the bins outside.

      a vehicle used to carry a body in a coffin to a funeral,

       a small bus that follows a regular route.

      a large, expensive car, often driven by a chauffeur

      a small motorcycle with pedals that can be used when starting
      it or travelling up a hill

25. Motorcycle BE /ˈməʊ.təˌsaɪ.kəlAE /ˈmoʊ.t̬ɚˌsaɪ.kəl/  ALSO  Motorbike
      a vehicle with two wheels and an engine

26. Mountain bike BE /ˈmaʊn.tɪn ˌbaɪkAE /ˈmaʊn.tən ˌbaɪk/ :
      A bicycle with thick tyres and a lot of gears. originally made for
      riding on hills and rough ground, but now often used on roads

27. Moving van BE AE /ˈmuː.vɪŋ ˌvæn/
      A vehicle used to transport furniture and other possessions when
      people move to a new home
