ARM &  LEG AND THEIR IDIOM EXPRESSIONS


3.  ARM

1, shoulder  BE /ˈʃəʊl.dər  : / AE /ˈʃoʊl.dɚ/ : one of the two   
    parts of the body at each side of the neck that join
    the arms to the rest of the body
    Idioms in BE :
    a, a shoulder to cry on : someone who is willing to
        listen to your problems and give you sympathy,
        emotional support, and encouragement
        e.g I wish you'd been her when my mother died 
              and I needed a shoulder to cry on
    b, stand shoulder to shoulder with somebody: to give
        someone or a group of people complete support
        during a difficult time 
2. arm BE/AE /ɑːm/  either of the two long parts of the 
    upper body that are attached to the shoulders and
    have the hands at the end.
    Idioms in BE
    a. an arm and a leg : (inf). a lot of money
        e.g. These shoes cost me an arm and a leg.
    b. under arms : provided with weapons and willing
        to fight
        e.g The rebels now have thousand of people 
               under arms.
    c. be up in arms : to be very angry
        e.g They're up in arms over the new management
               structure.

    a. arm in arm : with your arm resting in the curve of
        another person's arm.

3. elbow BE /ˈel.bəʊ/ AE/ˈel.boʊ/: the part in the middle of the
    arm where it bends.

    a.at somebody's elbow : close to and a little behind
       someone
       e.g. during the visit, the interpreter was always at 
              her elbow.
    b. give somebody the elbow : to end your romantic 
        relationship with someone.
4. hand BE/AE /hænd/ :  the part of the body at the end of
    end of the arm that is used for holding, moving, 
    touching, and feeling things.
    idioms in BE
    a.at hand : near in time or position.
       e.g We want to ensure that help is at hand.
    b. go hand in hand with something : closely related to 
        it and happens at the same time as it it or as a 
        result of it
        e.g. Prosperity goes hand in hand with investment.
    c. hand in glove : working together, often to do 
        something dishonest.
        e.g. It was rumoured at the time that some of the
               gangs were working hand in glove with the 
               police.
5. palm BE/AE /pɑːm/ : the inside part of your hand from 
    your wrist to the base of your fingers
    Idioms in BE nad AE
    have somebody in the palm of your hand : to have
    control over someone and to be able to make them do
    do anything you want.
    e.g. He had the audience in the palm of his hand.
6, thumb  BE/AE /θʌm / the short, thick finger on the side    
    of your hand that makes it possible to hold and pick
    thing up easily. 
    idioms in BE
    a. all thumbs  :  very awkward with your hands
        e.g. Can you untangle this thread for me? I,m
                all thumbs today.
    b. thumbs down : used to show disapproval of 
        something.
        e.g They gave our plan the thumbs down.,
    c, thumbs up : the antonym of thumbs down. 
    d. under someone's thumb . under someones'
        control in AE in the palm of your hand.
        e.g He's got the committee firmly under his thumb.-
              they agree to whatever he asks
7. finger BE /ˈfɪŋ.ɡər/ AE  , /ˈfɪŋ.ɡɚ/.  
. -index finger . finger next the thumb.
, middle finger   the longest finger on the hand.
  -ring finger : finger used for ring.
  -pinkie : little finger

3. LEG
`. 
1. thigh BE/AE  /θaɪ/  the part of a person's leg above
            the knee
2. hip BE.AE /hɪp/: the area below the waist and above the 
          legs at either side of the body or the joint that 
          connects the leg to the upper part of the body.
3. knee BE/AE  /niː/ the middle joint of the leg that allows
     the leg to bend.







4. shin BE/AE/ʃɪn the front part of your leg between your knee
      and your foot,
5.  calf BE  /kɑːf/  AE  /kɑːf/  the thick curved part at the back of 
    the human leg between the knee and the foot.
6.  ankle BE/AE /ˈæŋ.kəl/  the joint between the foot and the leg.
7.   heel BE/AE  /hiːl/  the rounded back part of the foot.

        idioms in Be
        a. come to hell : if a person or organization come to heel, to 
          obey. usually because they have been forcefully 
          persuaded to do so.

      b, bring/call something to heel  : to order a dog to come close 
          to you 
          bring/call somebody to heel : to force someone to obey you.
        c,    take to your heels : to quickly run away.
8. foot : the part of the body at the bottom of the leg on which 
    a person stands.
9. toe BE /təʊ/ AE  /toʊ/ : any of the five separate parts at the 
    end of the foot.

10. toe nails  the hard, slightly curved part that covers
    and protects the end of a toe.
11. big toe : the largest toe on your foot
12. little toes : the smallest toe on each foot,
